Cherry Beach

Here's a couple of sketches from Cherry Beach from the last two weeks. Both 8x10 oil.  Both about 2 hrs.

This was some sort of beach hut. Didn't get to the bells and whistles, but this caught something of it.

This is a painting of a somewhat derelict boat moored near the shore. (Mental note to self.. check wind direction beforehand next time when painting anchored subjects!).  We ran into the new owner of this boat while finishing up painting. He said someone had just given him the boat for free (yeah, it was in pretty rough shape).

First of 2012

It's been a while since I've actually done any painting outside or posted! Last week however I managed to get out to an OPAS event at Ashbridges Bay and though it was pretty cold and drizzling, I managed to park myself under a gazebo and pull or a small sketch of the beach and volleyball posts, nothing special..but It felt great to finall get outside in 2012!

A quick one of Toronto Island. 8x10 oil.

A couple of kids

Here's a couple of 6x8 portrait sketches of a friend's kids, Leo and Layla. I tried this more as an experiment than anything else to see if I could infuse some life in a portrait using just photos as reference. It's not something I found easy at all, and I'm not sure about the results which I feel look overlaboured.. but here they are anyway!

Thornhill Paintout

Had a great outing last Saturday at my first OPAS paintout in Thornhill. The event had about 20 artists competing in a plein air event with the finished products being voted on by the festival public. The event started at 10:00 AM sharp. Artists then had 3 hours find a spot, create and submit their art for voting. I had a somewhat mediocre attempt in the field, but tried to rework the finished product here at home. All in all it was a great day, and nice to finally a few more passionate plein air painters!
